Gréoux-les-Bains Declaration on tourism and global warming

Professionals of the tourism sector, gathered in Gréoux-les-Bains the 25th and 26st of June 2015, during the Web Sustainable Tourism Day, declare their awareness concerning the challenges of global warming and of the urgency to address the latter in a short term and efficient way. Therefore, they have expressed their commitment for a truly sustainable and long-lasting tourism.

Taking into account both, the already stated climatic evolutions and the upcoming ones produced by human activity and greenhouse gas emission in particular within tourism activities, the tourism professionals call for the mobilisation of all stakeholders for a responsible tourism.

Tourism, the world’s largest economic activity, generates important transports flows, accommodation needs and numerous activities translated today by important fossil fuels consumption
The dynamic of these activities, added to the demography of emerging countries show early that, within actual conditions, the energy bill and its impact on greenhouse effect can’ t be mastered.

In addition:

-Given the role to be endorsed by tourism, as a vehicle of cultural links – essential between the different human communities, of openness to all, of the respect of cultures and the comprehension between the population,
-Given The major role of tourism in the economic development of southern countries, as source of currencies, but also through its direct impact on employments, health and education;
-Given how tourism can contribute to the protection and enhancement of both natural and cultural heritage;
the professionals and experts gathered in Gréoux-les-Bains, call for mobilization for a fully responsible and engaged tourism system, committed to finding ways and means enabling to pursue its mission of development, while actively participating to the battle against greenhouse gas emission and its consequences for the planet.
A truly sustainable tourism within the framework of a sound ecology must be, and will be, a leverage of peace and progresses for mankind.
